The instructors at Premier Martial Arts and Fitness are constantly refining the Academy’s curriculum, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving martial arts system that combines the best of a diverse range of arts such as taekwondo, boxing, kick boxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The result is true Freestyle Martial Arts – martial arts with no limits!
The vision of Premier Martial Arts and Fitness Academy is to inspire and excite people’s lives through martial arts and at the same time instill the life skills and character of a true martial artist while upholding important values like courtesy, patience, respect, self control, integrity and discipline. Premier Martial Arts helps students develop perseverance, which is a non-quitting spirit to overcome life’s obstacles as well as self discipline, high self esteem, a spirit of constant improvement and an attitude that refuses to give up.
Students come to us from age four to seventy four. Some students are in shape, while others are overweight. Some come for self-defense, fitness and others for fun. Each person is treated equally, and is trained to the best of their own ability and potential. A student is never compared to anyone else. At Premier Martial Arts our instructors are there to guide, instruct, and motivate you to be the best that you can be. We develop healthy children with healthy minds so they have the energy and fitness to be leaders and success at life’s challenges. Premier Martial Arts and Fitness Academy is open Monday to Sunday and runs over 150 classes per week (view our timetable). Our classes are divided into age groups as well as beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. You don’t have to be in shape and there is no prior experience necessary. If you would like to experience the excitement and challenge of Premier Martial Arts, we invite you to come in and visit our school to begin your FREE Trial Introductory Martial Arts Course. You will have the opportunity to speak with the instructors and meet our friendly and professional staff. Through this free introductory course, you or your child will get a first hand understanding of the excitement, energy, empowerment, and life changing benefits of our Academy.
Master Zak Jovanov (7th Dan Black Belt) – Director of Premier Martial Arts Academy
Premier Academy teaches modern Taekwondo as prescribed by the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo Federation (the official governing bodies for Taekwondo). Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific traditional martial arts. It has become a global sport with a huge international following, and an official Olympic sport.
The Korean word “Taekwondo” translates into three parts in English – “Tae” meaning “foot” or “leg”; “kwon” meaning “fist,” or “fight”; and “Do” the “way” or “discipline.” By examining these three parts together, we can see the philosophical basis of Taekwondo. First, Taekwondo is the way of using fists and feet together. Second, it is a way to control or calm down fights and keep the peace. Taken together, Taekwondo means “the way of using all parts of the body to stop fights and help to build a better and more peaceful world.”
Taekwondo is similar many other Oriental martial arts and shares some features with them, particularly those from countries surrounding Korea, like Japan and China. Taekwondo differs from most other oriental martial arts in that it is very dynamic, with active movements that include a huge variety of kicks and footwork. Like most oriental martial arts, Taekwondo shares principle of physical movements being in harmony with the student’s state of mind, and their life as a whole.
All members learn Taekwondo kicking and footwork as it is embedded in our Freestyle Mixed Martial Arts system. Our Junior students learn traditional Taekwondo poomsae (patterns or kata) to improve their focus and discipline. Training in poomsae is optional for students in our Teen and Adult programs. Premier Academy also has a very active Sports Taekwondo team, and these students compete successfully in both sparring and poomsae at local, state and national levels.
Our Principal Instructor Zlatan Jovanov is a 7th Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt, and is authorised to grade students up to and including 6th Dan. All of our instructors are Kukkiwon-certified, and all of our students are eligible to have their rank recognised by the Kukkiwon.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS TRAININGS/CLASSES
The core of our training at Premier Academy is our Freestyle Mixed Martial Arts program. Training in our Freestyle Mixed Martial Arts system is suitable for students from all ages and walks of life and will:
• teach you to use your whole body through a combination of the arts of Taekwondo, Kick Boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu;
• give you access to a dynamic, in-depth and alive mixed martial arts curriculum;
• teach you streetwise, real-world self-defence skills that actually work;
• improve your overall cardio fitness, strength and flexibility;
• provide the opportunity to develop the mental strength you need to deal with life’s challenges.
Our instructors are constantly training and refining our Freestyle Mixed Martial Arts curriculum to ensure that students are always provided with the most progressive, effective and modern martial arts experience.
BRAZILIAN JU JITSU TRAININGS/CLASSES
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force that oppponent to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of BJJ is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless. BJJ techniques feature heavily in Premier’s Freestyle Martial Arts curriculum, but for students that want to expand on their knowledge of the “ground game” we offer a separate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. This program is taught by expert instructors, and students who train regularly will also be eligible to grade in this martial art.
Premier Academy’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are available to all students in the Adult Freestyle Martial Arts programs. CORE STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY CLASSES FOR AGES 16 AND ABOVE
Premier Martial Arts and Fitness Academy’s Pilates classes are designed to get you in the best shape of your life by rapidly improving your fitness, conditioning, strength, muscle tone, flexibility, posture and balance! This is done through intense classes that always focus on the correct technique in order to help you improve your concentration, physical coordination, balance and increase your body awareness. Our Pilates classes are also perfect for stress management and relaxation!
Our Academy’s Pilates classes are conducted by fully qualified instructors who will not only get your core strong and improve your flexibility, but also teach you the correct techniques for movement, balance, posture, and breathing. Each of our members is treated individually, and is pushed to the best of their own ability and potential. You are never compared to anyone else. Our instructors will guide and motivate you to be the best that you can be!
